Trail Report: Mojave Desert Exploring - 2

[COLOR="Blue"] I made another trip out to the Mojave National Preserve on Tuesday. This area is huge and has so many things to explore.

We started this time at Goffs, which is a Route 66 museum now, then headed up Lanfair Rd to Ivanpah. From there we went west over to Cima, then north on Cima Rd to the Kokoweef mountains, then down to Hwy 15 near the Californis/Nevada border.

This is a totally cool area, with great scenery and lots of old mine sites the explore. Most of the mines look like they were abandoned at the turm of the 19th century, though some were abandoned as late as the 1980's. Lots to look at out there.[/COLOR]

FYI - My wife's great grandfather built the Goff's school house. Her family still owns 80 acres in Land fair valley. I pay the taxes on it. You could spend every day for a year exploring the Preserve and not see it all. What a great place.

[COLOR="Blue"]I totally agree you could spend a lot of time out there, and I'm planning on some spring exploring out there. Lord willing and the taxes don't rise.

[COLOR="Blue"]Curtis we did around 550 miles in 16.5 hours. But that's in a JK with street tires.
We left at 4am and got home at 8:30pm.

Mkjeepers - When you were at the Kokoweef Mine. Was it abandoned? They were quite active a few years ago. I have not been on that part of the East Mojave in a few years, was going to do a trip out there this Decemember but things did not work out. So heading to Joshua Tree instead. The mine that you saw near I-15 is the Molycorp Rare Earth mine. They mine the materials that make TV/LCD. It was bought by Chevron some years ago. The Goffs School House is owned by the Mojave Desert Heritage & Cultural Association http://www.mdhca.org I have been doing stuff for them since 1990. I need to go out there more soon.
