Shant, because the road is narrow you move one vehicle somewhat in front of the hummer attach a block to the back of it and run the winch line that way to keep the Hummer from sliding down the hillside then pull it backward with another vehicle. Really not all that hard
He should be able to use the steering when pulling backwards, pulling with the winch that is attached to the block will also help move the back end of the Hummer up the road.

My biggest issue here is that I've never seen anyone pull an H1 before and I don;t know which vehicle can handle it or how to do it. If this was a Jeep in the same situation, I would have had it home the same night.
Thanks for all the info. We have a good group going tomorrow so I am extremely confident we will be successful...
Gotta go grocery shopping and stop off at the meat market, will see you in the morning.

I am sure the cookout will make it a good outing. I wish I could join the early morning activities. For heavy vehicles the pulley blocks are your friend, couple of winches will hold and pull it. First thing is do some rigging to stabilize it. Then pull it back

Here's an update. We decided to leave the F250 beast home. I got a call from the H1 psycho squad this morning and one of the guys will meet us with his H1. We are also taking up one other H2 with a winch.
Thanks to all for the inputs and ideas. I'll keep ya posted on the outcome.
If the Psycho Squad is coming to help you are in good hands. No worries; they'll take care of your freind's H1. That's a great bunch of people there.[CENTER][COLOR=#ff0000]Resistance Off Road

Recovery Complete
Just got back. It was a great day and a successful recovery. The H1 Psycho Squad are a group of really nice and experienced guys. Their H1's were filled with spare parts and shop tools.
Thanks to everyones advice from MJR and to FJKevin, Julie (Desert Jewel), Russ Chung and MtBikeBob for joining the fun.
We have plenty of video and it will be posted in a few days.
Thank You and Merry Christmas

This is the disabled H1. The tie rod end broke about 1/4 mile up the trail, and MrBash and friends attempted to tow the H1 down the trail, but in the dark, at a narrow spot, it slid off the trail. A small bush is all that kept it from sliding or rolling several hundred feet down the steep slope.
The Psycho Squad rigged three winches and a snatch block to stabilize the disabled H1. From left to right, Jim's black H1, Art's tan H1, Scott's black H1 and Ron's red H1.
Using the three winches, they winched the disabled H1 back on the trail:
After getting the H1 back on the trail, they replaced the broken tie rod end. Mission accomplished! The front wheels are again pointing in the same direction:
The recovery and repairs were completed just before noon; it was time to prepare lunch. The kebab was delicious; even Ziggy liked it:
After eating lunch we headed back down the hill. Shant stopped to play on the triple hill (meanwhile, I had to clean up my Jeep because Ziggy threw up and made a mess; I guess the kebab was too spicy for him).
We got down the hill, aired up and were on our way home shortly after 2 pm.If you don't like the way I drive, stay out of the bushes!
