  • Trail Report: Calico - Halloween 2009

For several years we've heard that several 4X4 clubs go to Calico for Halloween, dress their RV's up and hand out candy to the kids. So we thought we would spend the weekend up there and find out.

Shari and I met up with Steve (Bullysteve) and Fred (Flatout) and ran a couple of trails on Saturday. The trails were a little crowded (as expected) and the weather was perfect.

Saturday afternoon Fred left for home and Steve left to spend the rest of the weekend with his family in Calico Ghost Town.

We bumped in to some people we knew from the Victor Vally club and went to the Gatekeeper that night to watch the carnage. It didn't disappoint.

This was some of Saturday's run.

I'm glad to see someone tackle that part of the Washout on Wall Street. It is definitely more washed out that the last time that I saw it. Nice driving.

Was there bird hunting till 11.30 am or so then headed down to Wall St around 1230 ? Went down Wall St, but didn't see anyone. Saw that line that the guys were playing on, but being by myself stayed to the north of it. Got 4 birds. Scott and his wife in her Cherokee and me in the Grand Cherokee came back Sunday and played around in the back country. Beautiful weather. Kevin

Nice video work. Looks like a fun trail, especially the "tetter totter" spot!

Looks like you guys had a good time. I couldn't believe the amount of motorhomes and trailers in mule canyon. I have been going to calico for 15 years and have never seen it that busy. Could not have asked for better weather. Can't wait to go back in december.!

[COLOR="Blue"]I took the JK out on Friday - (had a committment on Saturady) - and visited with a few friends camped out in Mule canyon. On the way out I thought I would do a little exploring.

From Mule canyon I headed north toward Fort Irwin, then down and across Coyote Lake.

I've never seen motor homes that close together. We camped a little past that group and had a large camp site.

Night time at the Gatekeeper is a lot like night time at Backdoor. Park your rig, climb up the rocks and settle in for the show.

Shari that is a pretty sick and twisted video. I don't know which of you 2 is the sickest. Andrew driving over that stuff or you videoing it. Keep up the good work. SICKOS

                              Great time Halloween weekend...

We had a great time out in Calico this last weekend... It was great to run into Steve, Fred, Andrew and Shari.

On a side note... Andrew, I could only dream to do to my CJ-7 what you have done with yours! That is one hell of an awesome machine!

We headed out with a group of guys from Victor Valley 4 Wheelers and Town and Country Tire.

Headed up Doran with a group of 15 vehicles (13 Jeeps, 1 H2 (who apparently liked my Recovery Vehicle sticker) and 1 Toyota). Unbeknownst to me, I had lost my drivers front inner and outter wheel bearing on the flat tow to Calico... We actually thought that I had blown the hub or something... Wheeled all day long with 3 wheel drive. I did have to be winched up the waterfall... funny thing how important traction is...

Here are a few pictures and a link to the video for the day...

                              Rick and Trent

                              Stopped for lunch

Wow! That's a long way down!

This is what happens when the inner and outter bearings disintgrate... ruining the spindle and the brakes...

Mike, from Town and Country Tire using an impact to take stuff apart...

The Jeep's ride home... I hope he was comfortable...

Carmen is convinced (and I am not so sure I disagree with her) that my MJR name has brought some kind of a hex or something on my innocent little CJ-7. So, I am going to be changing my name... Any ideas? and Be Nice!
                              Regards,
                              Randy
