  • Trail Report: Nightmare Gulch - day run

I had a good time yesterday running the trail with the overnighters staying the weekend in Jawbone. We go to the Nightmare Gulch trail head at 10:30 with a large group, only to find the gate locked. Seems the Forest Service was a bit lax in opening it up on the proper date. There was a small group just before us, and they left and contacted the Rangers who promptly came and opened it up for us. We didn't have to wait long, and we didn't have to bypass the gate. Yeah!

The rest of the run was pretty anticlimatic. We had a good time, great weather, and a good group. Took a while to get everyone through, making for a late lunch in Camp Cudehay (sp?). Then we headed down to the V-Notch and played around there for a while, letting everyone have ample opportunity to run the Notch, including many of the women, which was great to see. Then we finished the run with a spirited drive down the wash, and headed into the sunset for Primo Burger!

And check out Russ running the Notch!

      Nathan,

Looks like a great time on the trail. Quite the mob scene. I stayed local and still need a couple of things done before heading out of town this weekend. Next time. Thanks for sharing.

The weather was a bit warm, but otherwise a great run!! When we first got to the trailhead, the gate was locked.
WTF? It's supposed to be open from October 16th to the end of the month, and this was on the 17th!

Just as we got the group turned around and headed toward Last Chance Canyon, a park ranger showed up to open the gate. Apparently the state employees were on furlough on the 16th, so there wasn't anyone available to unlock the gate until the 17th. With the gate open, we headed up the Gulch:

Can you guess which one is the student driver? Nathan (nwoods) and his daughter Megan:

After Nightmare Gulch, we headed to Last Chance Canyon:

Clay (cweed) getting some air at the V-Notch:

          Matt:

          Rebel:

After Last Chance Canyon, we headed back to base camp at Jawbone Canyon. Here's Al (igofshn) preparing dinner. His awesome apple cobbler is baking in the dutch oven:

After dinner the group started the night run, but I passed on the night run and headed home.
If you don't like the way I drive, stay out of the bushes!
