  • Trail Report: 3n62 & 3n36 8/13/09

We had a great mid-week run! Atendees:

Mary (Skittles) and her Jeep-dog Jeanie
John (xthread) and is daughter Kylie
    Gregg (TJgregg)
My wife LeAnne & I (Roger)

We all met ant the Valero Station With the exception of John who met us at 3N03 & Hwy 18.

Phase one of the trip was exploring 3N62 and all the spur trails. Here's a map:

The trails were moderate but there were a few spots we all agreed would classify as kinda difficult. The southern most trail ended at a guzzler. I can't recall ever finding one in the SBNF before.

After we left the area, I discoverd I lost my cell phone somewhere. I eventually found it in my center console buried in all the junk there.

Here are a few photos of the trip:

This is the end of one of the spurs. It looks like it used to go all the way to the desert floor but now it is only passable by a motorcycle. It heads down to Grapevine creek:

    This is the guzzler:

Coming back down from the top of Silver Peak, Gregg's front drive shaft u-joint came apart. Luckily he stopped immediatly and the bolts & brackets were all right there! So after a few minutes of making the repair, we were back at it:

Here we are on the trail somewhere between Silver Peak and the black Hawk mine:

Here we are at the Lester-Dale Mine. It has had more interior damage by vandals to the main house. If you ever want to see this piece of desert history, DO IT SOON. I don't know how much longer the buildings will be there. Don't put it off, I would be happy and I sure Mitch would be also to take anyone there who would like to see it:

One more view of the other buildings at Lester-Dale:

From there we headed north to HWY 247 and parted company. All in all it was a wonderful day with wonderful people. Oh yes, Kylie & Jeanie the Jeep-dog became best buddies whenever we stopped.

Thanks everyone who came along today - you all rock!

Thank you so much Roger for leading us today. It was so much fun and getting to meet new folks from MJR was great. Great day, great people, and fun trails. After spending my whole life on the valley floor in that area it was terrific to get up into "them there hills".

Looks like a fun way to spend a thursday.

John, nice shirt! I've spent many a afternoon tippin a schooner and eatting a special or a picked egg on a bed of pretzels. #1 seller of Blatz beer in the country at one point. Ah the good old days in Long Beach.

Curtis, I'll be glad to take you right after you lead me through New Dixi Mine Road!

BTW - how did your wife's surgery go?

More interior damage to the Lester-Dale mine! Okay, this makes me seriously pi$$ed off. This is one of the most incredible complexes left in the Lucerne Valley region, and people need to stop trashing it. Especially considering all the work others have done to save and restore the site. Angry, angry, angry.

Time to go to plan "B."

Looks like a great trip! I need to find some time in my schedule to check out Lester-Dale soon.

                      Okay... I give. Besides a pre-1974 V8-propelled car, what is a guzzler??

                        Mike,

A "Guzzler" is a concrete slab that collects rain water and funnels it into or stores it in an underground tank. The tank or storage area is covered with a sloped top so that wildlife can access the water for drinking. They area scattered thoughout the desert BLM lands.

Sorry Mike & all, I should have described what a guzzler is. I shouldn't have assumed everyone knows what they are. Thanks to Mitch for jumping in with the definition!
