  • Trail Run: Who's up for wandering around the Angeles National Forest this Saturday?

I'm planning to meander around the Angeles National Forest again this Saturday.

Here's a link to my report from doing this a few weeks ago:

    http://www.myjeeprocks.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=14743

Let me know if you want to come out and wander with me. It is open to anyone.

This is on very easy graded roads and it will be all about being up in the mountains exploring with some spectacular views and cooler temps.

I'm completely open to whatever time anyone wants to get started.

Any of us who will be going up Angeles Crest Highway (that's "The 2" in my book) from the La Canada side could meet at the La Canada Sport Chalet parking lot.

If you're coming from the Wrightwood side, a group could pick a place on that side of the hill to meet and then caravan up.

The two groups could meet at Newcomb's Ranch for a bite to eag (either bring your own or order something there.)

The trail starts about 100 feet from Newcomb's Ranch, so that would be a convenient place for everyone to get together. It could also serve as a quick meet and greet before hitting the trail.

If you haven't been up there, it's really a very scenic area to go out and relax in.

I was unable to put up a calendar event, because my account doesn't have the permissions to do so. If anyone with permissions wants to put one up to take a roll call, go for it.

So, post in this thread if you want to go!

    It's gonna rock!

What would you rate it for a beginner? Wife has it off, we might come. Do you have some pics from your last trip?

I found this. Look right? Mainly trails, not much rock, etc.

Dawn wants to take our son to grandma's house. So, I am trying to see if we can delay it until later that day How far is it from our place "92345"?

It's far below the ability of any stock Jeep even with a novice driver.

It's a very beautiful area. Even the drive to the trail is beautiful.

Looking at a map, I think it's about 60 miles to Newcomb's Ranch from Hesperia.

It's like the fire road portions of that video from You Tube. I only watched about half of it.

          It's very mellow.

It'll be fun exploring the area with someone who knows it well!

I'm flexible on the time, but just to throw out a number...how about 9:00 am?

We can make it earlier or later, but that would allow people from just about anywhere in the Greater Los Angeles Area to leave their places at between 7:30 am and 8:00 am.

If we leave the Sport Chalet parking lot by about 9:15 that would put us at Newcomb's Ranch at roughly 10:00 am. That would put anyone from the High Desert on roughly the same schedule without them having to get up too early.

Let's meet in the La Canada Sport Chalet parking lot on the right side of the store when looking at it from the front.

              This is going to rock!

Is this intended to be for Saturday 7/25/09? Because 7/23 was yesterday.

                  RSVP IS UP!:hijack:

Please let me know If any changes need to be made. Also if anyone has an address to Newcomb's Ranch I could use it. Google shows a few results and I am not familiar. I am going to talk my wife into taking her 4Runner up there. My axel is still MIA till Monday.

Yes, it's supposed to be 7/25/09. I made a mistake and entered the date that I was writing it on. I've tried to go back and change it, but it will only let me change text and title.

                    Anyway, it's tomorrow.

                      Hey Scott,

Thanks for putting the RSVP up! Now people can follow your link and officially sign up.

It'll be a perfect place to take the 4Runner and it will be great to see you both.

The address is not posted on their website (http://www.newcombsranch.com/) and they mention that mapping software doesn't really work for their location.

This may help. It's about 100 feet north of the intersection of Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2) and NF 3N21.

Assuming that you are starting in Oceanside, going through La Canada is the more direct route from and according to my mapping software should take just under 2 hours for you to get from Oceanside to La Canada. You may just want to meet us at the Sport Chalet Parking lot at 9:00 am.
