  • Trail Discussion: Cleghorn, Silverwood

I am looking for an easy run to do with the family on Saturday. I was thinking about Cleghorn over to Silverwood. I have never been there before and I don't want to scare the kids on there first trail run.. Any suggestions. Thanks ZJDON

There are some spots on the side trails that will scare more that just the kids on Cleghorn!

The cool thing about 'Cleg' is that you can bypass the crazy stuff pretty easily if you have someone with you that knows the side trails.

I can't go with you Saturday, but Cleghorn is a great trail to explore with a new Jeep. It is where I started wheelin' and it is near and dear to my heart. I have run every major improvement to the Jeep on Cleg first. It has a little of everything for testing your rig.

And the best part is that you can skip the stuff that you are not willing to try yet.

A nice easy, very scenic run is 2n33, Pilot Rock trail. It runs around and above Silverwood looking down onto the lake in many spots. The view form the higher spots is beautiful. The trail eventually drops into the forest and ends up back at the 173. Where you can hang a right and head to Arrowhead lake or make a left and head back down a nice shelf road back to where you began. Nice views from that road too. fwiw, 2n33 is the adopt-a-trail for the LOST JEEPS So-Cal club. We will be running it next Saturday. LMK if you are interested in checking it out w/ a small group.

Does anyone know if the trail into deep creek is still open. I remember some years ago the trail continuing after the creek was washed away and closed. I was curious if it ever re-opened.

If you're talking about Dishpan Springs (3N34), yes it's open.

I like linking pilot rock, willow creek, and 3n16 together for a long day of bunny slopes. Takes you from the 15fwy to the east side of big bear city. Very nice easy drive.

Dishpan Springs is not all that easy. There is a particular spot that is challenging. Cleghorn is very fun, but if you are wanting a gentle introduction, 2N33 Pilot Rock road is great, because the trails along side it the full length offer plenty of opportunity to play around.

Cleghorn is a very easy trail if you stay on the 13 mile fire road. It does have some very cool chutes that you can branch off on and have fun. They vary in difficulty. The best part of this trail is the backside fire road which drops down into Silverwood lake. The view is spectacular.
A couple of us are planning to go to Cleghorn Saturday. What time are going to be there? Earlier the better in case it gets warm
