    Press Release

    Dear Daily Press:

Please enter the following Press Release in your Community Calendar section.
WIND AND SOLAR ENERGY DEVELOPMENT IN MOJAVE DESERT MEETING FEB 12

The public is invited to join the Mojave Desert Bird Club, Sierra Club, California Native Plant Society and many other local environmental groups to our annual coalition meeting at 7:00pm, Thurs, Feb 12, at the Lewis Center in Apple Valley.

    * PROGRAM: * Development of Wind and Solar Energy in the Mojave Desert, with emphasis on the Victor Valley and Lucerne Valley areas.

    * SPEAKER: * Larry LaPre, biologist, Barstow Bureau of Land Management

The development of solar and wind energy in the Mojave Desert is a concern for all of us. Many applications have been made to the BLM for power plants fueled by wind and sun. If not carefully planned, these green developments could fragment habitat for the desert tortoise, eliminate many populations of rare plants and present a hazard for birds, especially golden eagles and prairie falcons. Larry will present an overview of these projects as well as the results of his research on raptors in the Western Mojave and how they might be affected by installation of wind turbines. Come early and visit the tables of the various participating groups.

Directions to Lewis Center : From Bear Valley Rd , take Apple Valley Rd north to Tuscola. Turn left to Mana. Turn right.. Continue about ½ mile to entrance to Lewis Center . Meeting in cafeteria. More info: Bill Deppe, 760 247-5421 or gonebirding@aol.com <mailto:gonebirding@aol.com>.

This could be good to attend and network a little. I'm considering becoming a member of the different groups while at the meeting.

Hey Roger, you lived there for a long time, have you ever seen a desert turtle? 10 years in Hesperia and playing in the desert I have never seen one, would be cool to see one.

                Sarah & Max - I won't make it either.

Actually I really don't think I could bring myself into a Sierra Club meeting. I would probably end up getting arrested.

I would have been there, just to be a fly on the wall... with an opinion. Remember, the Sierra Club started out as a Four wheel drive club...

I was running a Cat d9L bulldozer on laguna hwy project in orange county about 4 years ago. I was tracking(driving) to another area and had a bunch of BIG Cat 651 scrapers following me. While going down the dirt road I sae a desart tortoise crossing the road and I stoped everybody and got off and placed him on the other side of the road. He was sure to get ran over by one of those scrapers with 4'wide x 9'tall tires. I was amazed to see a desert tortoise that close too the beach.

                          Beau,

Sounds like you play with the big toys! 633's are as big as I've been around, watching not driving. If you saw a Desert Tortoise on a jobsite today they would shut down the job, do a study, post a person from the DTC (Desert Tortoise Council) to monitor the area, give training classes to everyone on the jobsite, have US Fish and Wildlife Service come by daily..... And you'd get a fine if you touch or pick one up. Pretty amazing isn't it. Oh, I heard that the stateis broke due to excessive over-spending. Hmmm

With the newly proposed and VERY LATE state budget (the one that is delaying your state income tax return) includes legislation to raise sales tax, income tax, gas tax, and property tax. With your money the state will be able to continue to support these superfluous jobs.

I keep thinking about the Boston Tea Party...
