  • Trail Report: Yosemite/Owens Valley/ MonoLake/Kennedy meadows

After leaving the Dusy Ershim Trail, I planned on getting to my secret fishing spot outside of Bishop, CA. I have never been to Yosemite, so I went that way to see the park, then go over Tioga Pass and drop down into the Owens valley. The scenery in Yosemite is fantastic, but I don’t recommend going in the summer when kids are out of school. It was a mad house, with a traffic jam that took 30 minutes to get us through the main gate. Not my idea of a good time. But as I said, the park is awesome. It was real hazy that morning so good shots were hard to get. Tioga Pass is one Kodak moment after another.

My favorite sign in the park

    This is for Chuck:

THis guy came and hung around me the whole time I was at this spot:

Then I dropped down into the Owens Valley and the volcanic crater that makes up a great deal of the Mono Basin. I got to the East side of Mono Lake for some photo ops:

Some history of the area around Mono Lake:

Then South East out of the Mono Basin over to Benton Hot Springs and some pretty cool off road tracks that haven’t been driven in a long time. I laid tracks for the first time in a long time on some of these trails:

Trails with no tire tracks... I can't resist!

Then I went to Bishop and did some more fishing. As usual, the fishing at the “secret” spot is phenomenal. I caught limits both days I was there, then went to Convict Lake and caught a few there. Catch and release all the way this time.
On the way home, I decided to go through Kennedy Meadows, and wound up coming down through Lake Isabella and the Kern River.
A heard of Elk South of Bishop

I fished the head waters of the Kern River South Fork, then fished the very end of the mighty Kern just before it disappears into the Aquaduct. Kind of sad that such a wonderful, powerful river has to be swallowed up like that. After all this wonder, the rest of the drive home through Bakersfield was BOOORRRRING!

Those photos of Yosemite remined me of when i was a kid. We camped in the main campground in the middle of the Park for quite a few years. Loved the place.

Feel free to PM me with the location of your secret fishing spot. I won't tell a soul

I call BS! Convict lake has no fish.

LOL, just kidding. It's sure a pretty area up there.

I'd love to see photos of your rig and how you packed for your extended trip like that, especially with all the spares and tools one tends to bring on trails like Dusy/Rubicon.

I like the bear sign never seen anything more than bear scat in Yosemite, is a beautifull park though especially in spring with the snow melt. Went to Sequioa last summer and saw tree bears lol go figure. Here is a pic of the little fellow that waqs wandering about 400 yards of our hiking trail

Hey Kurt you sure had a hellava week! I know you guys had an awesome time up there. Those photos are absolutely awesome. I sure miss the high sierras! Could'nt go this year, But I sure need to start doing some planning. Also miss the fishing up there. BTW, this morning I heard on the news that the entrance to Yosemite is closed now because of a fire near there So looks like you made it out in the nicka time.

How is Kennedy Meadows as far as camping and jeeping? Can you get a motorhome up there? I've been driving by that turn off for 30 years on numerous trips to the sierras and have never stopped there.

You can get a big motorhomeup at least as far as Troy Meadow at 8,000 feet. Nice CG in the pines. I have seen big motorhomes all the way back at the start of Monache Jeep Trail as well. Fishing in Monache at the South Fork of the Kern is pretty good- lots of small and middle sized trouties.

The offroading around KM is not all that hard, but the fishing and hiking are good.

                    Hope that helps.

                      nice report!

Rat Patrol, great report and pictures! I also enjoyed your pictures and Malachi's about the Dusy trail over on the west side. I've done some mild wheelin' and exploring over in the White Mountains, fall is coming and it'll cool off so I'll probably do some more. Drop me a line if you are thinking of heading up that way, maybe we could hook up.

                      Best Wishes,
