Public Meetings Scheduled for Proposed Geothermal Project
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has scheduled three open houses to gather comments on the draft environmental impact statement (DEIS), which analyzes the proposed leasing of approximately 14,731 acres of BLM-managed public lands for geothermal exploration and development in the Truckhaven area located in western Imperial County.
The meetings will be held at the following dates, times and locations:
Tuesday, March 20
6 p.m.- 8 p.m.
Borrego Springs Resort
1112 Tilting T Drive
Borrego Springs, CA
Wednesday, March 21
12 Noon - 2 p.m.
West Shores Senior Center
1375 Borrego Salton Pwy
Salton Sea, CA
Wednesday, March 21
6 p.m.- 8 p.m.

BLM staff will present a brief overview of the proposed project. Following the presentation, BLM will accept public comments. The timeframe of comments will be determined by the number of individuals who register to speak. Written comments will be accepted at these meetings. Comments received throughout the scoping process will also be considered during preparation of the final EIS. Written or email comments should be submitted by April 31, 2007, to the Bureau of Land Management, California Desert District Office, Attn: John Dalton, 22835 Calle San Juan De Los Lagos, Moreno Valley, California 92553. BLM has received five geothermal lease applications for public lands within the Truckhaven area in western Imperial County, California. The public lands being considered for geothermal leasing are located in sections 2 and 12 in Township 10 South, Range 9 East, sections 6, 8, 18, 28, 30, 32, 34 in Township 11 South, Range 10 East , in sections 4 and 6 in Township 12 South, Range 10 East, San Bernardino and Base Meridian.
The principal issues identified thus far for consideration in the DEIS include Native American concerns, cumulative impacts on existing, proposed, and potential geothermal projects in the area; potential impacts on cultural resources, potential effects on wildlife, potential land use conflicts on recreation; potential visual impacts, and potential impacts on surface water and groundwater resources. The DEIS also addresses issues such as geology, geothermal resources, vegetation, threatened or endangered species, air quality, noise, transportation, human health and safety, and socioeconomics as well as any issues identified during the scoping process.
