Hikers and campers in the San Bernardino National Forest are encouraged to make plans in advance. A recreation fee has been required on portions of the local forest since 1997, and the Forest Service routinely issues Notices of Non-compliance (warnings) to persons who do not display a valid Adventure Pass or Golden Passport on their vehicles when parked in fee areas. Beginning in June, though, people who repeatedly fail to pay will get citations. The fine for the first conviction is $100; a second conviction could result in more serious penalties. Registered owners of vehicles can also be held responsible. Learn more by calling the Big Bear Discovery Center at (909) 382-2790.
