Controversy: OHV use in Riverside County

We received the following note from Ann McGrath:

    OFF ROAD VEHICLE USE/RIVERSIDE COUNTY

There is a movement underway in Riverside County
to change your right to ride and limit your use
of your motorcycle on your own property. This is
quietly being pushed by a group of horse
    enthusiasts in Aguonga.

I'd like you to immediately involve your web
sites and publications to make the motorcycle
riding public aware that your rights are being
    usurped.

THERE WILL BE A PUBLIC HEARING AT THE RIVERSIDE
COUNTY PLANNING OFFICE, GROUND FLOOR, ON OCTOBER
    20, 2004.

PLEASE ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO E-MAIL OR ATTEND
THIS MEETING. A link is provided:
    mbalys@rctlma.org

This is the email to the planner, Mark Balys,
Deputy Planning Director, working on this
project, which is being recommended for approval
    by the County.

    Johnson, phone no. 909-955-3265

AMENDMENT TO ORDINANCE NO. 348 - Land Use
Ordinance of Riverside County - CEQA Exempt -

Article XIXf that provides development and siting
standards for off highway vehicle usage within
the unincorporated areas of Riverside County.

    *****SAMPLE COMMENT*****

    Dear Riverside County Planning Commission:

My name is <<<INSERT YOUR NAME AND ORGANIZATION>>>.

I am writing to state my opposition to this
proposed AMENDMENT TO ORDINANCE NO. 348 - Land
Use Ordinance of Riverside County. The proposed
ordinance amendment proposes to add Article XIXf
that provides development and siting standards
for off highway vehicle usage within the
    unincorporated areas of Riverside County.

Off highway vehicle recreation is the fastest
growing sport in the region, passing golf and
tennis, that so many planners spend millions on
    to develop.

Riverside County has provided no OHV riding
opportunity for its residents. Yet, the County
is embarking on an effort to deny its residents
the opportunity to use their private property for
OHV riding. The proposed amendment assigns
overly restrictive criteria to the use of private
    property.

Please keep me informed on any issues dealing with OHV in Riverside County.

Please enter this on your record as "OPPOSED to
the proposed Amendment" at the October 20, 2004
    meeting.

New Development in the Sage-Grouse Campaign

For Immediate Release: Oct. 15, 2004

DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS LAUNCH NEW OFFENSIVE
    AGAINST PROPOSED SAGE-GROUSE LISTING

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Thirty Members of Congress
from both political parties are warning the U.S.
Fish & Wildlife Service not to list the Greater
Sage-grouse as endangered because they say a
    listing could damage existing conservation
efforts at the state and local levels.

"As Members of Congress representing Western
states, we are writing to urge the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service not to list the Greater
Sage-grouse as 'endangered' or 'threatened' under
the Endangered Species Act (ESA)," the
    Congressional Representatives wrote. "We believe
that such a listing would be counterproductive to
    successful state and local Sage-grouse
    conservation efforts already underway.
