    Well i went up rock springs from hesperia and made a left onto 173 and dam it was locked! So i had to run up vv's trail 17x! Sure it a hot trail with no trees this time of year!

    Caltrans, in it's infinite wisdom decided to close the state highway rather than maintain it. A few of us tried to convince SB County to take it over, but the effort fell on deaf ears....

        can't they just put an "unmaintained road" sign on there, and call it done?

          It is all about money. The state cannot afford to make it a 2 lane paved highway. The state cannot afford the liability involved with its deteriorating condition.

                Agreed. Supposedly the fire service can open the gates in an emergency for an escape route for forest residents.

                We used the road a couple of times a year to get up there, and are also sad to see this road lost.
