• Marines Release New Alternative 6 for Twentynine Palms Proposed Base Expansion

For Press Release and Map go to: http://pfjv.org/

The Partnership For Johnson Valley will issue a statement on the latest revision "6" after it's review of the new map.

In a brief statement, Chairman Harry Baker said that he is disappointed to see that none of the area to the east of the base was included, and again, it is the recreation lands and those lands that border the communities that are targeted.

[Brief Description of new proposed Alternative 6]

Proposed 29Palms Training Land/Airspace Acquisition Project
Project Description Paper Number 5 – November 2009
Alternative 6 (West/South)
About 140,000 acres west/19,000 acres south
Maneuver would start from the east on the
current MCAGCC base and the south
study area, and the MEB battalions would
converge on an objective in the west study
area.

No dud-producing ordnance use in 40,000
acres in the south of the west
study area; this 40,000 acres would be open
for public use when MEB training not
required.

Given how much of the CA desert is already under military control (what's the combined size of 29 Palms + China Lake + Fort Irwin?), do they really need the extra acreage?

Have the considered a proposal to not expand at all and use the massive acreage they already have more effectively for their needs?

We are currently fighting two wars that are in landscapes exactly like this area. I’m not really opposed to them expanding. But they can be much smarter about it. There is plenty of desert out there that is not an established recreation area like Johnson Valley.

Short answers are "yes, they do." and "yes, they have."

The big hope is that they will expand east into the Sheephole Pass area.
There is currently an agreement like this in Camp Pendleton with some beach areas. It doesn't work very well though. The "range scheduling" people are already overworked and it's difficult to know when the areas will be "open for public use." I have some suggestions for the PFJV, but not sure who to PM about them.

I fully understand the importance for the troops to be fully trained and in the best way possible. What is hard for me though, is that per the Marines that have spoken at the meetings regarding this expansion is the fact that this additional land will be used once or twice a year for a four day battalion maneuver. 4 to 8 days of usage a year doesn't warrent the huge loss of public lands. Hope that they go east.

Where can I read the specifics of their rationale behind this latest massive acquisition?

Since the President says that we will begin pulling out of Afghanistan in 18 months, I wonder if that changes the rationale and the need for that training area????

Russ,

In 18 months, The President may not enjoy a majority in the House & Senate. I pray so anyway....
