  • California Trail Inventory, Please Read!

As a Cal 4 Wheel Delegate for my club, I thought I would send this out on MJR for all of you to see.. this is IMPORTANT!
    here it is...
From: John Stewart <john@muirnet.net> Subject: Forest Service Route Inventory

You are receiving this email as you are an recreation leader within California. This email concerns the on-going Forest Service route inventory effort within the Sate of California. If you recreate on Forest Service lands. this topic is of concern to you.
On November 20, Rich Farrington held an informational brief in Ontario, CA. The brief covered the objectives and status of the Forest Service route inventory effort.
The Region 5 Forests {all national forests in California) are in the process of conducting a “route inventory”. This will lead to a route designation process over the next few years.
What does this mean to you?
For starters, any route NOT on the Forest service inventory WILL BE CLOSED. This does not mean that ALL routes on the inventory will remain open.
What will the Forest Service be doing?
The Forest Service has teams locating and travelling each route within the forests. They are documenting (via GPS) routs and building new maps for the forest transportation plans.
    What can you do ?
We (recreation interests) will need assistance from everyone concerned about recreational access to forest routes to assist with an effort to document recreation routes of interest.
    What will happen?
We (recreation interests) will be able to provide data to the Forest Service documenting our routes of interest. The FS will not accept GPS data. They will accept maps or other data (start points, end points, distance, etc) describing the location of the route. The Forest Service will locate and document the route.
    Okay, then what?
We (recreation interests) need to keep on top of each Forest while they are conducting their general management plans to ensure that recreation interests are incorporated. Everyone that has a favorite trail needs to make sure that trail becomes part of the inventory.
    And?
Public meetings have started in the Plumas NF. Other public meetings are expected to be announced within the coming months.
    And?
The CA4WDC South District Environmental Affairs Committee has begun efforts to set up teams to collect information 1) for comparing with Forest Service provided data and 2) for providing routes of interest data to the Forest Service.
That still leaves a large segment of the forests not covered. Any volunteers????
Information and status updates will be forwarded when it is available.
    The Next Step:
It will be up to recreation interests to ensure their favourite routes are included in the inventory. CA4WDC has started a process that will be used in the four Southern California Forests. We know we cannot document and validate all recreation routes of interest.
I am proposing a coalition of recreation groups to work on the Forest Service Route Inventory effort.
    Tasks to accomplish:
Develop a list of participants (name and organization represented).
Each participating group assume responsibility for one or more national forest in California. Each participating group compile a list of routes of interest. Compile a master list of routes by forest.
Validate the Forest Service Inventory with the data from the Recreation Master List.
This effort will require the cooperation of a large number of committed groups and individuals.
Please distribute this email as necessary to reach all groups and individuals willing to participate.
