The Halfmoon Trail is located in the Mt. Pinos District of the Los Padres National Forest approximately 60 miles north of Los Angeles (approximately 80 miles by road). The Forest Service describes the 3 mile long Halfmoon trail as a "four-wheel drive road down Piru Creek drainage to the Piru Creek Trail. Dead-end route for four-wheel drives." (The Piru Creek trail is for motorcycles and ATVs only and it connects to the Miller Jeep trail.) The Halfmoon trail is rated a black diamond for 4wd vehicles. We ran this trail in September, 2007, and this section of Piru Creek was dry, with only scattered wet spots. I think that this trail would be much more interesting early in the year when there is more water in Piru Creek.
