  • Frankfurt Preview: New look for Jeep Cherokee

Chrysler is abandoning the Jeep Cherokee's current curvy look in favour of a back-to-basics return to straight lines for the 2008 car, which will be unveiled next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The 4x4, which arrives in the UK next May, also gains new independent front suspension, five-link rear suspension and modified rack-and-pinion steering to address criticisms of its ride comfort and handling. The full-time four-wheel drive system has also been updated, and there's a choice of a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic gearbox to go with the updated 2.8-litre diesel engine.

There are also new seats and increased storage space, plus new options including a full-length sliding canvas roof.

Chrysler has also updated and restyled the Grand Voyager MPV. The seven-seater has a new seat-folding system, heated first- and second-row seats, an extra rear-view mirror, electric windows for the second-row doors, movable LED reading lamps and a removable torch. The 2.8-litre diesel engine has also been updated. The smaller Voyager, meanwhile, is being replaced by the Dodge Journey.

Chrysler will also launch the Sebring Cabriolet at Frankfurt. Due on sale in the UK early next year, it's a four-seater with a power-folding soft top. Like the Sebring saloon it will come with a choice of petrol and diesel engines.
