Sometime around mid July Tracy and I decided to do a road trip up North to see some sights and visit friends and family. We decided to drive Highway 1 North from Santa Barbara to Leggett and Highway 101 north to Eureka before heading Inland to Ashland, Oregon and North again to Crater Lake.
Our original plan was to leave La Habra by 10am on Friday August 3. Work got in the way and we didn’t leave until 2:30pm. Surprisingly we hit very little traffic. We stopped in Buelton at Anderson’s for split pea soup.
We arrived at Pismo Beach at sunset only to find all 1000 sites on the beach sold out.
We boondocked in Atascadero.
Saturday August 4 found us at Morro Rock for breakfast.
We were in Cambria by 10:30. We stopped for pictures at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in Big Sur at 1pm.
We wanted to have lunch at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, but it was a zoo and there wasn’t any parking for a truck and camper. We crossed the Golden Gate Bridge and continued North on Highway 1. We were running low on fuel and found an off the beaten path gas station in Bolinas. We had dinner at the Olema Farmhouse Restaurant and boondocked again in Fort Ross.
Sunday August 5 we had breakfast at Stump Beach.
We climbed to the top of the Point Arena Lighthouse and took some pictures of the coast and wildlife in the area.
We had lunch at Russian Gulch State Park.
5 miles around Piercy was closed due to a huge reggae festival. We used a wifi connection at Fort Bragg around 2pm. We took a hike in Salmon Creek State Park at 5pm and picked some apples and pears from an ld homestead orchard. We had dinner in Eureka and spent the night on the Klamath River.
Monday August 6 we backtracked 18 miles to Redwood National Park and had breakfast and took a hike.
At 11:30 we headed back North again. We stopped at Trees of Mystery and took pictures with Paul Bunyan and Babe. We found a really cool covered bridge East of Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park.
We arrived at Oregon Caves at 3pm only to find the next 2 tours already sold out and we did not want to wait for the next open tour. We ate lunch in the Oregon Caves Café and headed for Valley of the Rogue State Park. In camp at 6pm and used the wifi to catch up on the last 3 days.
Tuesday August 7 we made the 30 mile trek South to Ashland, Oregon and spent the day with Tracy’s friend Gigi.
After a bbq at 5pm we headed North to Crater Lake. We checked in to Mazama Campground at 7pm.
Wednesday August 8 we did the 33 mile loop around Crater Lake. We had breakfast in a turnout with a fabulous view of the lake. We took a 5 mile detour to see the Pumice Desert. Back at Mazama Campground around 1pm for laundry and lunch.
We decided to enjoy the sunset overlooking Crater Lake so we headed back out on the loop to Cloud Cap. Back in camp at 9pm.
Thursday August 9 we headed South. We had breakfast at the Rogue Gorge/Natural Bridge.
Farther South we parked at the Rogue River trailhead at Peyton Bridge and took a 2 mile hike along the Rogue River. We found a little abandoned kitten while hiking the trail. He made the rest of the journey with us and is now part of the family. We named him “Rogue”.
We ate lunch in Yreka. We arrived at Bushytail Campground on Trinity Lake at 6:30pm.
Friday August 10 we ate breakfast overlooking Trinity Lake. We drove North to Gazelle Callahan Rd and then East to Mt Shasta. We went up the Everett Memorial Highway to 7650’ and had lunch.
South to Redding and East to Helena. Tracy’s dad spent many years recreating near Hobo Gulch and we found his old stomping grounds.
Back to Bushytail Campground at 7:30pm.
Saturday August 11 we ate breakfast in Redding. We had lunch in Sacramento with my cousin and her family. We left Sacramento at 4pm. South to Fresno and then East on 168 to Dinkey Creek. We spent the night with the NAXJA group that was in the area all week running Dusy/Ershim, Swamp Lake and Bald Mtn.
Sunday August 12 we ate breakfast near Shaver Lake. We headed West to Fresno and then back East to Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. We had lunch near Lost Grove.
We walked the General Sherman Trail and made our way to Dorst Campground at 5pm.
Monday August 13 we headed Southwest to Visalia, South to Bakersfield, East to Kramer Junction and South to Norco. Back home at 4pm.
