  • gas mileage

Hope to help everyone get more seat time. I have been adding acetone to my fuel and it has given me a major increase in mileage. I use 76 gas 87 octane and add 1oz of acetone per every 10 gallons of gas. the results were 47 percent increase in mileage. before using acetone I was getting a wopping 10 to 10.5 miles per gallon. Now after running 1 oz of acetone to 10 gallons of gas I now get 14.7 miles per gallon the jeep runs better.

Adding acetone to your tank is definitely not advised, and what does your poll mean?

I have a couple of questions, and one comment.
          1) How many tanks of gas have you monitored the gas mileage on when adding Acetone? One tank does not a miracle make!
          2) Are you going by the odometer when doing the monitoring? Not accuarate enough.

My comment is this; Acetone evaporates at room temperature (approx. 76 F) very quickly. Adding one oz. of it to 10 gallons of gas, the dilution rate is so high that any octane boost gained would be minimal at best, and the Acetone will flash before it can get to the injectors. Besides, a higher octane # doesn't equate to higher gas mileage. Hate to be a pest, but I've been racing since the 70's and tried all the power/mileage boosting tricks. The best thing you can do is keep 'er tuned, the tires inflated and air cleaner fresh. And stay off the "skinny"peddle...

when a liquid changes to a vapor it dropps in temperature!

There's a few things odd about this post.

Firstly, Its his first post, yet hes been a member for a long time.

The poll makes no sense at all.

He posts that he'd like to help us all by sharing this information, yet he has no idea who any of "us" are.

To the original poster: If you're for real, please come back and post some meaningful information.

But he still shows zero posts. Weird.

I don't understand his poll either.

And during the Mythbusters test of acetone, they reported that it actually decreased mileage...

                        Episode 53: Great Gas Conspiracy

Myth: Automakers and fuel suppliers are in collusion to keep us dependent on expensive gasoline and inefficient cars. There are many devices that one can use to cut your fuel consumption.

They got a carbureted car and a fuel-injected car to test several types of devices. The cars were placed on a dynamometer, which allows the car to drive without moving anywhere.

                        Test devices and additives:

                        - Fuel line magnets: working on the "principles of hydrodynamics," they are supposed to align the molecules for more efficient consumption.

                        - Acetone additive: supposed to make gasoline burn more efficiently

                        - 300mpg 'super' carburetor

                        - Hydrogen fuel cell generator: flammable hydrogen gas produced by electrolysis.

Adam labeled it "Gasbuster: Stickin' it to the Man"

They tested each car on the dynamometer at 35mph and 55mph with each 'device.'

                        Carburetor car:

                        Baseline: 17mpg at 35mph and 25mpg at 55mph
Magnets: exactly the same as baseline busted
                        Acetone: 16.7mpg at 35mph and 24mpg at 55mph busted
Super carb: much worse than baseline, 12mpg at 35mph and 17.7mpg at 55mph busted

                        Fuel-injected car:

                        Baseline: 19mpg at 35mph and 27mpg at 55mph
                        Magnets: 18mpg at 35mph and 26mpg at 55mph busted
                        Acetone: 18mpg at 35mph and 26mpg at 55mph busted
                        Cheers! M2

I have ZERO faith in Mythbusters since they did the episode on the poison factor of "granddaddy long-legs" using the common garden spider in California as the test specimen. They do not do their homework before they make an episode.

But for the Acetone test, I don't doubt that the result was negative. So what did they blow up at the end THAT episode?

It takes a couple of tanks to see a difference
