  • Roll Cage

well, i bought the tubing to make my cage and whatever else i can dream up to make with 1-1/2" dom tubing. i got 44' of this stuff that ought to be plenty to whip up a nice cage and make a few mistakes along the way
i also picked up a harbor freight 15 ton hydraulic tubing bender for the task. i'll post pictures as they come available.

is it a tube bender or a pipe bender. IIRC they are different and you shouldnt use a pipe bender for tubing. After all you are building a roll cage not plumbing a toilet. Let me know if you need any help.

well, it is the orange tube/pipe bender
if you are offering me the use of your available equipment, i'll take it! otherwise, you are more than welcome to come by and learn with me on this harbor freight bender.
        let me know.
i am planning to do something with it over thanksgiving weekend...

The orange bender from Harbor Freight will both crush the tube and kink it - it'll give you the bends you need but it will signifigantly weaken the cage.

it is the same bender that kirk is using for his cage... his seems to look pretty good, without crushed bends..

well.. the project has started. i worked on it for about an hour this morning... (that is all the time i could get away with) and i am happy with the progress..
i will be doing it similar to kirks cage because the bender wont do the tight bends required to do the one piece hoop over the windshield. so, i will be running the tubes from the floor to the spreader bars.. and above the windshield between the spreader bars.
i'll post some pictures tomorrow... i think it is looking pretty nice.

That is the downside of those types of benders. It can become a problem with some projects. But if it does what you need it to, you just can't argue with the price.

Don't let anyone fool you, even with the slightly weaker corners you will have (due to the egg shaped bends), any cage is a huge improvment over no cage. And few things are cooler than a DIY jeep project!

                Lets see some pics!
olllllllo <--- If you can read that, roll me over!

Price is soon forgotton, quality is not.

well, ladies and gentleman.... there you have it. the first half of my first cage i am very pleased with the quality thus far. i have a few more pieces to add to the cage... then on to the frame tie ins.
i am undecided on the bar across the top of the dash... what do you think? do i need it?
i'll be completing the "family" cage sections next.
