• A little Jeep trivia

In a 1936 Segar comic strip, Olive Oyl received a box labeled "Eugene the Jeep." Eugene turned out to be a friendly little creature who made the sound jeep. He could predict the future, and when you asked him a question, he always answered truthfully, by wiggling his tail. The following year, several manufacturers began developing an all-purpose vehicle for military use. The finished vehicle was designated with the letters g.p., which stood for "general purpose." Probably influenced by the then well-known Eugene the Jeep, the letter-name g.p. was modified and the comic strip jeep was adopted for the vehicle, and jeeps they have been ever since.

I've had all I can stansk, I can stasnk no more...

Where did you get your information? Cause it's not totally accurate. There are SOOO many stories on the Jeep history. The military G.P. did not mean "General Purpose" (Yes...Ben Stien was wrong!). It was merely a letter name given to the vehicle for military usage, like everything else in the army...like Tanks, Water Trucks, Helicopters, they've all got letter names. G.P was merely given as the particular name. Willy's car company was given the task of making these vehicles, and after a while the term "GP" is a similar sound to "Jeep." and The Willy's company tagged the name. ALSO! The Kaiser company was contracted by the government, and began making GP's.
Just another bit of info, Willy's and Kaiser were both rather small companies, so Ford stepped in an began converting some of their factories to help with the large workorder the government had put in during the war. SOOO You may find older military APV's made by FoMoCo. Yup...further emphasising the fact GP was not General Purpose...because APV is an "All Purpose Vehicle", and the Jeep was replaced during Vietnam with large body Chevy Trucks, and then Large Blazer-Esque Dodges came into the mix, then after that the actual Chevy Blazer with a 5.7L Deisel was used. AND Finally after those were the H1 Humvee...

Indeed... as a matter of fact, if you ever see a Ford GPW (as opposed to a Willys MB), you'll notice that nearly ALL of the parts have a Ford logo on them- even the bolt heads have a stylized "F" on them. This was because Ford didn't want to handle warranty repairs on Kaiser/Willys vehicles (and vice-versa). Also, Ford devised the one-piece stamped-steel grille... Willys original grille design was a heavy welded-together piece that involved a lot more labor (and cost).
