I have used FreeBSD as a server for a couple years now and love it! After seeing the new iMac I got the itch to dump Windows so I did it last night. I went with SuSE Personal 9.1 and the KDE desktop.

Now I need to get my email working again and find out how to run iTunes and I will be pretty happy on my computer. Getting my Windows games to run will be the truly fun part

I'm still not very familiar with Linux, but the MJR server is Unix and so is the platform for Mac OS X. I think they're similiar - do you have a good web link? What are the advantages of Linux over Windows?

Unix, Linux, BSD, FreeBSD and now Mac OS X are all Unix to me. Many people will argue they are different (which is true) but they are so similiar I count them the same. Almost anything that runs on one can be compilied to run on the other. Linux has the greatest support of the all open source OS by far.

Linux's main advantage over Windows is its not Windows Security is better, tons of great free software that is just as powerful as anything you'll buy (OpenOffice = Microsoft Office, GIMP = Photoshop too name a few). The OS is free (there are some you can buy but it is usually to just receive a few months tech support and a nice pretty box and manual). Its a true multi-user OS so a program crash crashing the OS is very rare (unless you are working with beta stuff). IMO it is just cooler

There are a lot of downsides. Software usually does not come with a simple install program but you get use to it. Information on the Web can be outdated so you have to really research it. Sometimes there are too many options its hard to make a choice. It really isn't for the faint of heart.

A good weblink for what? Don't want to sound like a smart ass but its such a wide subject I don't think there is a single good website that sums it all up.

Also I will help anyway I can.

I'd start with some of the distros (companys that package Linux and give it a really nice installer):

                http://www.suse.org
                http://www.redhat.org

Next check out the desktops (the GUI is a seperate part from the OS). The 2 big ones are:

                http://www.gnome.org
                http://www.kde.org

If you are serious about getting into it, start with a spare computer that is lying around that way you can play with it all you want til you feel comfortable. There are even Linux version that will run on the PowerPC chipset so you can get rid of that Mac
