  • Black powder rifles

Doesn't appear that many here shoot the old black powder rifles. But I thought that I'd pass on a trick that I learned. I have two Kentucky 45 cal. long rifles. One had a very tight bore and was a pain to shoot. You might get two balls off before you would have to clean it or suffer the third ball getting stuck in the barrel. An old boy at the gun club recommended Gunk water pump lubricant, found at Napa store. Mixed 50/50 with water, and soak your patches in it. Cleans and lubes the barrel as you load it. Even though you can buy lubed patches, I still soak them in the concentrate. Can and have fired 20 balls thru this particular 45, and could of kept going. Makes shooting a whole lot more fun. Kevin.

A not-obvious trick there. Have you tried lapping the barrel?
