I'm sure not all of you have heard the news... the future of this forum is not clear at the moment.

There is a bill being passed through the legislature called SOPA. If you haven't heard of it, search the web (and use startpage.com - who doesn't record your search data).

I will find an article that is concise and post it here, but I'm already late is waving this flag as it is, and I apologize for that.

I haven't read the bill yet. As I understand it, among a list of things, site owners will be responsible for content posted by users. So you can see how this could put a stick in our little patch of dirt.

A great summary of info: http://m.readwriteweb.com/archives/w...pa_in_2012.php

It's not just this site though - it's your life on the internet as you know it. Please look into this, and contact your representatives with these links:

If you don't, I'll put one of those popups on the site

P.S. If you host sites of your own, or know anyone that does, please move your domains from GoDaddy.com. They supported this bill because they were exempt. (Hmm, kinda like the NRA! - but I won't get started on that...)

Thanks to Materdaddy for this find:

At a minimum, this means that any service that hosts user generated content is going to be under enormous pressure to actively monitor and filter that content. That’s a huge burden, and worse for services that are just getting started – the YouTubes of tomorrow that are generating jobs today. And no matter what they do, we’re going to see a flurry of notices anyway – as we’ve learned from the DMCA takedown process, content owners are more than happy to send bogus complaints. What happened to Wikileaks via voluntary censorship will now be systematized and streamlined – as long as someone, somewhere, thinks they’ve got an IP right that’s being harmed.

You are correct - but since I no longer trust them, I'm still moving my domains.

Isn't this a first ammendment issue? But, where does it say you have the responsibility of others' speach?

I still moved all of my domains to namecheap.com for multiple reasons.

                        1. The transfer extended my expiration by a year for less than a year at godaddy. ($6.99 per domain using coupon code SOPAsucks on 12/29)
                        2. $1 of my transfer was donated to the EFF using that coupon code. I'm an EFF supporter already, but the tiny bit extra would be nice.
                        3. I don't like flip-flops in politics, only on my feet. Changing their stance is just like when a politician does. I want to support a company with integrity, not one that just changes because they saw a bit of backlash. Coincidentally flipflopseveryday.com was one of the domains I transferred.

All that being said, unfortunately the day labeled "transfer day" didn't seem to do much: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/n...-over-sopa.ars

I've actually stopped hosting my site with GoDaddy as a result of all of this and looking for a new place to move. Thanks for posting it up Sarah

No problem. Let me know if you find a place you like. I usually recommend GoDaddy to clients because they always pick up the phone and are mostly reliable.

I can't vouch for the "pick up the phone" bit or anything, but my switch to namecheap.com went well. In addition, a few bucks went to the EFF as a result of the coupon code when I transferred my domains!
