  • Places to go shooting near Cougar Buttes/Lucerne Valley?

My kids and wife want to avenge the first quarter of school on some poor defenseless sporting clays this Friday. We plan on camping out near Cougar Buttes in prep for Mike's mine run the next day.

Where can I go shooting around that area without violating any land use laws? Can be allowable BLM open areas ( like Cslico), or a designated fee based range open to the public, I don't really care which.

I found this BLM info page. If I'm reading this right, the Cougar Buttes area is open land, and not a designated OHV area, and thus target shooting is legal?

Any one else concur or have a different interpretation of this policy page?

Found it! Straight from the BLM website. Though it took quite a bit digging to find it (the search tool not very efficient!):

Shotgun shooting is specifically allowed in this general area, specifically including Cougar Buttes. Rifle and pistol are NOT allowed, but shotgun is a yes.

I still wouldn't shoot around Cougar Buttes, There's just too much activity there.

Go North on Camp Rock Rd. Don't turn where it veres right towards JV. Go straight North on Harrod Rd. Work your way to the hills. That's a much safer place to shoot. It's not that far from Cougar Buttes
