  • The last 10 Days

So, I'm posting up just because I've known too many that have had troubles over the last 10 days and perhaps some of you know some good Irish prayers, blessings or poems you'd care to share.

7 days ago a young single mother I know and met eons ago in high school. Was passed out on her bathroom floor. Her mother found her and left her there for about 12 hours. After which at some point she had a stroke due to lack of oxygen to her brain. She had swelling in her brain and nearly died. Finally, someone called an ambulance and she is alive and doing better.

5 days ago another single mother I know from training at my gym. Had a very close and dear friend that she loved take his own life. Less than 5 years after her spouse passed from cancer and her home caught fire. All of this in less than 5 years if I'm not mistaken.

Now my take on suicide is not one of pity, but it is not one of blame either. All the stories I see I often find myself angry or frustrated at someone. Her mother or the guy driving the jeep. I don't take enough time in my life to genuinely feel compassion. So I'm taking time now as it's something I've lacked of recent. To sit down and take earnest grattitude in how blessed my life is.

    Go n-eírí an bóthar leat.
May the road rise with you.

May the blessing of light be on you—
    light without and light within.
May the blessed sunlight shine on you
    and warm your heart
till it glows like a great peat fire.

I actually really like that last one.
Sarcasm is my body's natural response to stupid.

I don't speak Gaelic (always thought it would be cool to learn), but my favorite translation of that first line is

"May the road rise up to meet you."

I don't think this is the most literal translation, but the idiom here is an ancient one for a demonstration of esteem and/or affection. Even today if you walk into a room and someone stands up to greet you and shake your hand, embrace you, whatever, that lets you know that you are welcomed and honored.

It's a well-known Irish blessing, but worth repeating.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the rain fall softly upon your fields.
    And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

        Float-

Drank away the rest of the day
Wonder what my liver would say
        Drink, that's all you can

Blackened days with their bigger gales
Blow in your parlor to discuss the day
        Listen, that's all you can

Ah, but don't, no don't sink the boat
That you built, you built to keep afloat
Ah no, don't, no don't sink the boat
        That you built

Sick and tired of what to say
        No one listens, anyway
        Sing, that's all you can

        Rambling years of lousy luck
You miss the smell of burning turf
        Dream, that's all you can

Ah, but don't, no don't sink the boat
That you built, you built to keep afloat
Ah no, don't, no don't sink the boat
That you built, that you built to keep afloat

Singled out for who you are
It takes all types to judge a man
        Feel, that's all you can

        Filthy suits with bigot ears
Hide behind their own worst fears
        Live, that's all you can

        It's all you can
        It's all you can do

No matter where I put my head
I wake up feeling sound again
        Dream, it's all you can

        Tomorrow smells of less decay
The flowers quick just bloom and fray
Be thankful, that's all you can

Ah, but don't, don't sink the boat
That you built, you built to keep afloat
Ah no, don't, no don't sink the boat
That you built, you built to keep afloat

Ah no, don't, oh no, don't sink the boat
Oh, that you built, that you built to keep afloat

A ripe old age, a ripe old age
        I'm a ripe old age, that's what I am
I'm ripe old age, a ripe old age
A ripe old age, just do it the best I can, hey

A ripe old age, a ripe old age
A ripe old age, that's what I am
A ripe old age, a ripe old age
A ripe old age, just do it the best I can, hey
        The best I can

Peat is like a decayed turf, in some areas they use it for fuel I imagine like we use coal. Condensed compressed grass and molded grass and vegetation.

I always loved the irish blessings, something very wholesome about them.

May there always be work for your hands to do.
May your purse always hold a coin or two.
May the sun always shine on your windowpane.
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be near you.
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

And thank you for those 2 inVERT'd that's one of my favorite as well, I just hope to get my feet dirty in Irish Soil some day
