I haven't been out of the country since I was a kid, but am planning a trip to Australia . . . most likely in early Feb 2010. I'm sure I'll have more questions but for now . . .

Where do you get a Passport?
What all do you need as far as documentation/ID to get one?

    Joe,

    You need:
    1. CERTIFIED copy of your birth certificate (it has to have the embossed seal)
    2. Two passport size photos (I looked in the Yellow Pages for a place to have it taken; I believe that now you can have your photo taken at the Passport Agency)
    3. Your checkbook!!!

I needed my first passport in a hurry, so I went to the Federal Building at 11000 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Since you have plenty of time, you can go to the Post Office to apply for your passport.

Here's a link for more info:

Thanks Russ . . . Looks like I'm going to have to have my mom find and send me my Birth Certificate. Good thing I'm not running for President!

you can go to the county clerk and get one also, I believe it cost around 75 extra to get the thing in a hurry.

got my passport at the post office- needed the stuff russ mentioned (birth cert, application form, 2 pics, and $$$)

i got my pics at costco- $5 for 2 at the photo counter. the post office mails the stuff to the state dept., who processes it and mails your birth cert back to you with your shiny new passport. took about 3 weeks in my case, but processing time varies.
