        Vern,

Great photo! Looks like a fun exploring day with the family. I must get out that way someday.

Some other things to look for in the Desert:

Abandoned military bases (Hint: big one n/o US 95 & Goffs Rd. streets are still there)
          Abandoned airfields
          Bombing tagrets (the asphalt rings)

I love this kind of stuff!

[COLOR="Sienna"]East of the Salton Sea??? How far east??? Be careful, you may wander onto the Chocolate Mountain Arial Gunnery Range out there. It's huge and it's all impact area for AirForce, Navy and Marine aircraft. The Navy Seals train out there at times also.

From experience, it's not marked too well in some locations.

I've been good and ..uh.. misplaced while wheeling the hammers and came across signs marking 29 palms... from the back. oh well, I have a base decal...

I was in occotillo wells a few years back and came across an entire town.. streets, street signs, fire hydrants....just no buildings.

The bombing rings are cool. Way bigger than you'd think.

I was out that way last year. More NE of the Salton Sea. My Uncle and I had to hike in 6 miles cuz it's all Wilderness Area now. So no Jeep. But I would love to pack in for some serious camping and exploring once it cools down out there.

                            (edit)
We were originally looking for the Patton training area but never made it that far. We ended up at the Patton museum for a short visit.

Ah yes, the Lost Ship of the Desert. I believe that its real and it's out there somewhere. Too many persistent rumors, and most rumors have some origin of fact behind them.
