Many of you travel with your dogs when off-roading and rattlesnake bites are a real possibilty. Vet costs can range into the $1000-$2000 dollar range for treatment if the dog survives the bite. The Riversdie Chapter of Quail Unlimited is hosting a clinic next month.

Patrick Callaghan’s Rattlesnake Avoidance Training is a safe, humane and proven method to teach your pet and/or working companion to avoid the danger of being bitten by a rattlesnake. Due to the usual delay of symptoms and the variable effects of snake venom in individual dogs, a dog does not associate the resulting pain and discomfort with the rattlesnake bite. Veterinary treatment after a bite can be very expensive. Patrick trains each dog to respond with aversion to the scent, sound and sight of a rattlesnake to avoid being bitten by one. Training is conducted in a controlled environment ensuring the safety of your dog(s) as well as the safety of the muzzled or the defanged rattlesnakes used in the training.

All of our SAR dogs have been through similar. Kinda cool when your huffing up or down a trail, and suddenly the SAR dog stops QUICKLY and sits. However, not a good thing when one of our dogs (now being trained for explosives) does it!
