  • Nothing changes despite all the changes.

I first got into off roading some time in the late 70’s through the mid 80’s. Here’s what I recall about then as compared to getting back into it now.
Then. A 4” lift and 33’s were about as big as you should go.
Now. 35’s are getting tall, but add a little beef, 6” lift, some gears and 37’s and bigger is the norm.
Then. V8, lockers and a cage and you had an exotic jeep.
Now. Make your jeep into a buggy and you have an exotic jeep.
Then. A Scrambler was to long and kind of dorky.
Now. Some trails are easier with a long wheel base.
    Then. Levi package was trendy
Now. I got nothing for that one.
Then. Cool was Smitty built double tube bumpers.
Now. Hard core jeepers wouldn’t own them.
Then. Hearing KMET rocked your home town was cool.
Now. What is KMET? Ipods rocks. (I still don’t have one)
Then. An old guy was over 40
    Now. I’m over 40
Then. A chick in a jeep was sexy
Now. My wife (and chicks) in a jeep is sexy
Then. 4x4’s were cool no matter what they looked like as long as you wheeled them.
Now. 4x4’s were cool no matter what they looked like as long as you wheeled them.
    Then. Junk meant junk
Now. Junk means three things, junk, private parts, and a jeep/4x4
Then. A good day is when you didn’t break anything.
Now. A good day is when you didn’t break anything.
Then. If you had a nice jeep you probably didn’t wheel it. (Not always true)
Now. If you have a nice jeep it’s a mall crawler (not always true)
Then. Off roading was a dying sport because all the roads are going to be closed.
Now. I hear the same things, not sure how many trails have been closed. (Anybody know?)
Then. You meet the nicest people when you go off roading.
Now. You meet the nicest people when you go off roading.

I've been off-rading since 1972 so let me add this:

Then: Holcomb Valley campground was free (and clean)
Now: Holcomb Valley campground is now $12.00 a night (Still clean)
Then: No Adventure Pass (tax)in SBNF
Now: Aventure Pass (tax) now required in SBNF

Then: Rodman Petraglyphs accessable by anyone
Now: Rodman Petraglyphs closed off so only the healthy can enjoy them.

      I'll stop there...

I'm sure there are more like this.

I know I could have written more but what would I do in another 20 years?
