  • Last night, the oldest living Rose Queen passed away

Last night my Grandma Nicky passed away. She was the oldest living Rose Queen. She was Queen back in 1936. This wasn't something she bragged about, mostly because she didn't like the process in which the queen was picked (I think). I never got to ask her about this. So take this for what its worth: Don't wait til someones gone. Sit down and talk with them and ask the questions you've always wanted to ask.

    I wish I did.

    Goodbye Grandma.

      Chris,
      Sorry to hear about that.
Wasn't she in the Rose Parade this year? I seem to recall a mention about the oldest living Rose queen on a train float or something like that.

Nope, she refused to take part in any of the rose queen ceremony stuff after she was queen. I never really knew why. All she said is she didn't approve of the process or something to that effect. I never got to ask why. Maybe my dad has some insight into that, but its one of those things that was never talked about.

              Chris,

Sorry to hear of your loss. Your advice is right on the mark. My father passed last June and I had and took the time to ask those questions and to be there for him. When you are at peace it makes it a lot easier. The coolest thing he ever told me, was after seeing that I had things going good for me and was secure in my life was "It's great to be your friend not just your dad".

It's tough to lose those we love, but God & time helps us to move on. I wish I had talked to my dad more about his experiences in the Navy during WWII. He gave me a Japanese rifle he got from a "dead Jap' on a beach in the South Pacific. I should have gotten all the details from him.

Apparently the Tournament of Roses didnt look very hard. That Rose Queen was from 1940. Still a long time ago. We saw that mentioned in a newspaper as well. Sadly, the newspaper quoted the announcer, whereever it was that the announcer got his information, they were wrong as well.

Up until Thursday, she was indeed the oldest living Rose Queen.

My Mom just called and said The local LA chanel 9 (KCAL) News is going to do something on her tonight. She said 8, 9 and 10 PM. I don't know if it's going to be on one of those times or all.

Condolances Chris. That's pretty cool though. A rose Queen. Lots of good memories for all of you.
