My hometown in upstate NY was a big apple producing region, and there's a distinctive taste to apples that ripen in the cold fall nights back there.
Anyway, I found an awesome orchard outside of all the tourist garbage of Oak Glen and near some decent trails to Big Bear. Pick your own, $20/half bushel, and being up around 6000 feet, they've got that crisp taste I like.
The place is on Hill Ranch Road, off 38 a couple miles outside of Angelus Oaks. You can also get to it from 1N86 off Glass road. It's called Stetson Creek Ranch (http://www.localharvest.org/farms/M19216).
