  • Where do winches go when they die?

I don't have a winch. I'd like one though. I'm not content just buying one and bolting it on. Even if I did just buy one, I'd have it in a million pieces on the floor first because I want to know how to repair it when it craps out. I want to know what happens to them when they do crap out and don't get rebuilt. They sure don't end up on eBay or Craigs List. Well, maybe they do but those places are so saturated with retailers wanting to sell me new ones that I really don't see any old, dead ones. I'm good at repairing things and tinkering. I know I can bring a completely cooked one back to life but I don't even know where to start looking for an old, cooked one. I'd want to use a synthetic line and all sorts of custom doodads to make it extra strong and extra unique. I'd like to find an 8k-12k pound name brand unit, or at least a manufacturer that's still around that I can get parts from. Where would you guys start looking for an old, non-functional winch for really cheap?

On the front of any YJ Hahahahaaaaaa...
No seriously. I saw an old beater with a winch on it sitting on the side of the road on the way to BB. I don't remember what town it was in, but just look around while driving. I see stuff like that all the time.

It actually didn't occur to me to find a beater Jeep and buy it off the Jeep. I've been looking for something removed, collecting dust in someone's garage. I'll try asking some of these craigslist guys selling jeeps if they would part with their winch.

You might give Scotty's in Fontana a call. They may have whiches by the truck load.... they get every wrecked Jeep on the West Coast I think.

You might also try Tri-County Gear in Pomona. They are an authorized Warn winch repair center, and I have seen plenty of old clunkers lying around. I'm sure you could work out a fair price for one and fix it up yourself.

I had 2 different people give me 2 dead Ramsey REP 8000 winches. I used Cole-Hersey Solenoids to operate them. Bought one new motor assembly from Ramsey. Dropped the other one off to be rebuilt(2 years ago and its still not done).
