    Kit Car Show at Knott's 4/26-4/27

    The "Fun Under the Sun" Knott's Berry Farm show is happening this weekend. It's hosted by the Association of Handcrafted Automobiles so there will be lots of Cobra, Lambo and Porsche replicas there. I love those things, so I go for all of it.

    For those of you with one-track minds, there are some off-roaders there.

    Not sure I understand how a "kit" car show would be hosted by the association of HANDCRAFTED automobiles? Am I missing something?

    I've been building cars for a while and never have I said my stuff was handcrafted. I didnt know you could be considered a craftsman with just the simple act of bolting parts together. Sweet!

      Well, "Kit car" is just a nickname. If it arrives in a crate and requires hundreds to thousands of hours of bolting, riveting, fabricating, glassing, smoothing and painting... that's handcrafted. You still have to come up with a drivetrane on your own. You most definitely don't get a box of parts that you bolt together in an afternoon. Jeepers buy Jeep parts and bolt them on. Imagine starting with a pile of steel and building a Jeep. THAT would be a handcrafted vehicle.

      Just out of curiosity, what would you consider a handcrafted automobile if it's not a kit car?

        Well, I'll add to this a little bit. I've only built one "kit car" with a freind. AC Cobra, 427. While I wouldn't consider it completely hand-crafted, it did take a butt load of hours fitting, forming and fabricating. The one part that was not well thought out in the kit was the front fender inner mounts to the firewall. We had to make all new brackets and actually went back to the manufacturer to get a drawing revision so his docs matched the car. So there is alot of our engineering in that car. But my buddy sure feels it was hand crafted, and I guess that's what counts. BTW, that Cobra runs consistant 11's in street dress, normally aspirated, premium grade pump gas. Not a rattle or squeak.

              As long as it's over terrain with at least 6" obstacles...

              Actually, some of the fastest cars in the world are kit cars. Ultimas have a tendency to smoke Ferraris and they're in the $50k range.

              Anyway... it's a fun show. I've gone for a lot of years. It's great talking to the tinkerers and fabricators about how they overcame certain barriers in the construction of their cars. I'm not just talking construction barriers either. It's not easy convincing the DOT, DMV and highway patrol that something you built in your garage practically from scratch is road worthy. It's interesting.

                  To me that is a kit car . . . anything that comes to me in a box. Handcrafted to me means just that, handcrafted. I can't find the pics, but there are several cars out there, built by true craftsmen. Hand formed body panels, one off parts, a vision beyond what comes in a crate. If they're going to do so much work on the thing anyway, why not start with something besides a "kit"?

                    I've seen those cars. Those guys do show up there. I have lots of respect for those guys. To build a kit car, you definitely have to be a craftsman. You need way more skills than the average Joe. Something like 50% of all kit cars don't get completed by the original owner because somebody underestimated the effort involved. Buying a half finished kit car is a good way to save some coin actually. I'd love to build one, but I currently have too many projects going as it is. I restore classic cars as a hobby and it takes the same skills. The things that come in the crate are just the basic forms and structure of the final product. If you simply bolted together what came in the crate, it would look like crap and definitely not run or drive. The contents of the crate are not a car.

                              '59 Pontiac Bonneville Coupe right now. Dropped in a 455 Buick engine and I'm quickly realizing just how different a 455 Buick is from a 389 Pontiac.

                              Also got a '72 Lemans Safari with the GT package. It's unrestored and perfect that way. I may give her some paint later on, but nothing drastic.

                              I usually sell my cars when I'm done with them. At one point, I had 6 going at one time!?! This was back when I lived in an apartment
