  • Dead XBox360

My XBox 360 seems to have kicked the bucket after just a year. I noticed that it's been kinda loud lately . . . especially the fan noise, but just in the last couple of days, it started acting really weird, getting locked up, not wanting to start up, etc. Now I'm getting the red flashing lights. Anybody know how to go about getting one of these things fixed?

Yes. Contact microsoft about their warranty replacement program. I believe you can get that number from xbox.com. They will send you a coffin for your xbox to mail back to them. They will inspect it and send you a replacement with more heat resistant parts inside.

The stats are ridiculous. Something like 1/3 of all xboxes fail. Luckily, mine is still good and I use it every day. I use it as my DVD player.

Took your advice and gave them a call . . . they let me know right off the bat that my XBox is out of waranty, but because I'm seeing 3 flashing red lights, the warranty goes for 3 years. So like you said I'll get a box send it to them and in 2-3 weeks should have a repaired (maybe mine, maybe not) or a new one. Either way, I hope it's quieter . . . this thing started sounding like a hair dryer recently!

Hey Schmo, what are you playing? I am bored to death with Assasin's Creed and I think I'm going to abandon it. I didn't like COD4. I handled Bioshock backwards and forwards. Same with Halo 3. Anything else good out there?

          Rainbow 2 . . . pretty good, but if you didn't like COD4, doubt you'd be a huge fan.

I was thinking the same!!! Probably my favorite yet for the 360. I just wish they could make it a co-op like Halo where buddies can join in without the whole live set up, etc.

That's exactly what I say to my COD4 friends about Bioshock. It's hard to find people that like both.

Same here, sent it in to Microsoft and it came back more quite than it ever was.
                    Works great now

I have had the problem twice, they will fix red ring even if it is out of warranty because they are not exactly sure what makes the problem. I have two 360s, because I play online religiously and I didn't feel like wating for the other on to get back, and since then both have done it. I only sent of the first one, the second I fixed myself with a towel. yeah I know it sounds crazy, but wrap a large towel or two around th xbox and let it run for about 15 minutes or so and hen turn it off, unwrap it, and let it cool. It worked for me.

Heat. It causes solder bleed. Most people with red-ring-of-death issues have their heat ports blocked somehow. Your towel trick continues the solder bleed until it drips. Definitely not a perfect solution but it has been known to work. I've also heard of people leaving their x-box in the freezer overnight. I would just get MS to handle it if it ever happened to me. After all, even if they send you one without the upgrades, it's still new parts inside.

The best way to prevent your xbox from getting the red-ring-of-death is to keep it horizontal on a hard, flat surface(no carpet), away from other entertainment center components, not in a cabinet, and NEVER put your video game case or anything else on top of the unit. This sucker has no fans, so the only way to circulate air is the "chimney effect". Hot air escapes through the top and draws air in through the sides and back.

I have mine in a glass door cabinet, flat, with a 1" spacer to keep it off of the shelf and I drilled 5, 2-1/2" holes in the back of the cabinet below and behind the unit, then above the shelf above the XBOX I drilled a 2-1/2" hole and fitted a fan blowing out, so the unit draws air thru the XBOX area and up, and out. keeps it cool enough I guess, been running it for hours nonstop gaming, no problems...

Nice! I have mine on a little wooden IKEA cart with a shelf underneath for controllers, cables and whatnot. The bottom has a magazine storage rack area which is perfect for the power strip and power brick.

Mine got the RRoD after about a year of use. It was in an open cabinet with no other compnents on or around it. I guess it depends on how much use it gets. I couldnt wait for the refurb. box so I got another one with the HDMI port. I told the wife Id's sell the refurb box when it comes back. Shh, I still have it as a "back up," Dont tell her! I guess I probably should sell it, cause I dont game as much as I used to.
