Ordinance issue keeps on truckin'
City council to hold special meeting on Thursday, April 17, in Hesperia High cafeteria to discuss trucking ordinance

After a preliminary meeting had an overflow crowd turn up at Hesperia City Hall, the city council is moving to a special venue when the council, at long last, considers changes to the city's truck parking ordinance.
The meeting will be held on April 17 in the cafeteria at Hesperia High School.
"That's the largest area we could think of that's available," city spokeswoman Kim Summers said Friday.
A planning commission meeting in February attracted an estimated 400 residents, mostly truckers opposing the proposed changes, well beyond the official 179-person capacity of city council chambers.
And that was just for the planning commission's review of the ordinance, which led to a vote opposing most of the proposed changes, in a non-binding report that will be passed up to the city council at the special meeting.
For the main event, even more residents could show up.
"We expect a lot. At least probably that many," Summers said.
Historically, Hesperia has been the most truck-friendly of Victor Valley communities: Victorville bans truck parking altogether and Apple Valley prohibits it except on lots larger than 2.5 acres.
[COLOR="Blue"]Among the proposed changes before the city council are ending Hesperia's two-hour truck parking grace period; ending the city's little-used street truck parking permit program; requiring trucks and recreational vehicles to be parked in the back yard of residences; banning multiple trucks from being parked on a single property; prohibiting parking on adjacent parking lots; and increasing the minimum lot size required for residential truck parking to 2 acres. The proposed changes may also apply to RVs as well, if the city council votes to approve that proposed change.[/COLOR]
According to Hesperia Code Enforcement, 437 truck-related complaints were made in 2007, approximately one of every seven complaints made last year.
Unlike at February's planning commission meeting, nothing else will be on the city council's special meeting agenda.
"We want everyone to have a chance to speak," Summers said. "We're trying to make it as accessible as we can."
February's planning commission meeting lasted four hours, and April's meeting is unlikely to be any shorter.
"I suspect it will be a long evening," Summer said.
