I just got back from Big Bear and almost everything was shut down. There was a storm passing through and it was the winter season, but come on! The whole south side of Big Bear Lake was shut down due to snow. This is normal. The whole north side was shut down due to the passing series of storms. Snow at night and rain all day. There was only one trail open and it was a relatively easy one... normally. It was the Gold Fever Trail. Last night, a couple of forestry service guys got stuck and required pulling out. The road was rutted beyond recognition near the 18. The standing pools of water could have been 2" deep or 2' deep. I tried to go in the other way, via Polique Canyon Road. The road was covered in mud and ice and rain was coming down over the top of all of it. The uphill sections required constant momentum with a running start to avoid slipping. I had to turn around only a little ways in because I wasn't travelling with other vehicles. I gotta go back!

Just a tip for your weekend... hit the Discovery Center on the north side of the lake before you start looking for trails. The staff there can give you a trail map and point out what's open that day. Most likely, this storm crap will be over by then and most of the north side trails will be open."The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."
