  • A New Type Of Identity Theft

This has been verified by the FBI! Please pass this on. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any
of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen. The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois , and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and
the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Thanks for the info, as much as I don't like to go to JD, I always go. I was lucky this year, it was called off, so you never know, thanks again!

Only an idiot would give their ssn over the phone to someone they don't know. Serves them right.

I agree. I'd tell them to send an officer to my house and I'll give the court my SSN in person.
If we aren't supposed to eat animals, then why are they made out of meat?

Nobody knows everything or is above making a mistake. Besides,...Another new one is now some scammers have cloned the IRS website and claim that you have an aditional refund as you have made a mistake on your taxes and of course they provide a nice link to collect where of course you give them info...

Use firefox or IE7... They both help catch forged websites:

(Personally I'd stay away from IE7, but when looking for a screen shot of firefox's phishing detection I found out that IE7 does the same thing)

I know some people are paranoid about security/identity theft/etc., but I just tend to try and be as informed and smart as I can when it comes to these things. Thanks Matt for bringing this to all of our attention so nobody here makes any mistakes! :thumbs_up
