  • Ham Newb.

I'm just getting started with this ham thing. I got my hands on a used radio, from Rugged. It transmits from 134 -174 MHz.
    http://www.ruggedradios.com/index.ph...products_id=28

    I have 2 questions.

    1) How do I go about getting a license?
    2) I need a mobile antenna for the above radio. Is there a shop in the OC, or IE area? I've heard of Jun's in Culver City, but that's kinda far from So. LB.

    Thanks for any help. Joe

    Congrats!

To get a license, you'll need to find a testing site.
    http://www.arrl.org/find-an-amateur-...e-exam-session

    HRO is in Anaheim, http://www.hamradio.com/locations.cfm?storeid=1

If you haven't studied for the test yet, there's everything from online practice tests to iPhone apps to help you pass

VERTEX, (Rugged) it is Yaesu's Commercial line. Did you get a good price on it ? Programming will prove to be interesting from what I have read about that rig.

Its all new, to me. So I'll have nothing to compare it to. I went to Ham Radio outlet, to get an antenna. Wow! I had no idea how precise they are with frequency. I on know CB's. 40 channel range. So I had no clue I had to pick a frequency. I chose a 1/2 wave, to get the widest frequency range.
It was like that when I got here.

Thanks Mike. I already spoke with Albert. He sent me to Jun's. But I went to Ham Radio outlet. They're closer, to me.

Google for a local Ham radio shop. I found Ham Radio Outlet, down here. They helped me with figuring out what kind of antenna to get, and other technical items, I know nothing about. Took a lot of the guess work out of it.
