Text over ham.

Is it possible to send short text messages over HAM radio? I've googled to no avail. I found some great info on APRS. It could take the place of a SPOT Tracker with no yearly membership. But would it be simpler to have a station at home that had a text display that the wife could read weather she was near the radio or not when it cam in?

I found some great info on APRS. It could take the place of a SPOT Tracker with no yearly membership.

SPOT satellites have excellent coverage in North America.

APRS repeaters have good coverage in urban areas and a bit sparser coverage in rural areas.

I passed my tech class this morning! Won't have a a call sign till Friday.

I didn't know the the repeaters needed anything special for APRS. I guess it's not a substitute for the SPOT.

Not yet. I like this kenwood. I want a dual bander with cross band repeat. I like the the backlight and the free programing software.
