    Sarah & Nipple Twister,

Did either of you hear me toady? I tried calling KG6FOP toady a few times when I had a good signal into the repeater.

I've been there a lot of times. Come home after an all day run, pound a bunch of beers while posting, then wake up the next day and immediately go to the edit section and start repairing the damage! BTDT

          Have fun.....

            Negative, Ghost Rider.

I heard a blip around 855am but it was not you. Then again, I don't even know what a PL is, or how to set it, so maybe that was the issue.

I wasn't able to call at 9:00 AM, but I tried at 11:00 or so and then around noon.

The pl is a sub-tone that is transmitted along with voice by a user to "unlock" the repeater, receieve a transmission and then resend it out. It helps prevent interference from another repeater on the same frequency.

To "open" a repeater, you must have the correct pl for the given repeater encoded in your radio. It's no big deal really, we'll help with the programming if you like. That is if inspector gaget err I mean Rick hasn't figured in out already

She doesn't need a PL to listen in any case, only to transmit.

I didn't make that clear in my post.

Ok guys, I can't figure it out. What is a PL? Is there a HAM newbie FAQ somewhere?

PL (Private Line) is a subaudible tone that's sent out with your transmitted signal that "unlocks" the repeater (or squelch if you're running tone squelch)

You'll learn all this when you study for your license. Right now, you can listen without knowing how or what a PL is/does
