They are DIY Mag Lites although one guy on Expo sounds like he will be selling completed flashlights for $100.

On 3 alkaline batteries they say you get 20 minutes at 900 lumens. They say NiMh rechargeables will last longer.

very bright however too much work for 20 minutes of light. I'll take a streamlight LED at 160 lumens for 6 hours and 2 rechargeable batteries with piggy back car charger for $50 more. A little light all night is more important than a blinding 20 minutes.

Wal*Mart has flashlights for $1 for those who are interested in only "a little light all night"

Did you take the time to read the information in links? Some of the folks are building the lights with multimode and NIMHS and getting much longer runtimes.

Here is another link that you probably won't read either.

Can't believe the flashlight industry is "just discovering" NiMH batteries. That's almost 3 generations old for the Electric RC folk (with similar discharge requirements)

Where are the LiPo (and better yet A123/LiIon) flashlights?

In scuba we've been using NiMH and LiIon batteries in our underwater lights for quite a few years.

I use NiMH batteries for my 21-watt HID light, which gives me a 4-hour burn time. If I used LiIon, it would take my burn time up to 6 hours, but it costs quite a bit more.

Depending on who I get them from, the LiIon are about 10-20% more expensive then NiMH (but can be charged at 10C instead of 1C).

The "true" A123 packs are about 15% more than that.

little bit of a side track to the OP but:
the lights listed above on ebay are using li-ion rechargeable batterys. the "18650" battery that most of the Chinese lights run from are the same battery found in laptops. the benefit being laptop batterys have lots of research invested in them and they are cheaply available. 2500ish Mah @ 3.7v for less then 5 bucks aint too shabby

FWIW the maglight conversions are the most expensive route to get "900" lumins, but there pretty dang neat!

also FWIW myself and most of the mine explorers i know get our lights from here. http://www.dealextreme.com they are cheap and often need some quality control, but the prices allow us more lumins and more back up lights for our money

                              Very cool website.

What are the "mine explorers" using for lights? I have a couple of good lights but they are pretty much spot. I am looking for more of a flood to eliminate tunnel vision, pun intended. I like the big picture, illuminate those drop holes in some of the adits and for photography.
