  • Toe In

I just replaced my tie rod and need to adjust my toe in. I can't remember, is the front of the tire supposed to be about 1/4 inch shorter than the back of the tire? Also am I measuring from the center of the tire tread or the inside edge of the tire? I was pretty sure its the center of the tire but then I thought its kind of hard to identify the exact center of the tire tread.

I like to use an 1/8". It doesnt really matter where you measure from, as long as its the same front to back. I use the inner casting flash on the tire.

1/8" here as well. I usually pick out the point on one of the lugs that isn't torn off....which can be difficult as tires wear out.

FYI - Dukes69 has never checked his toe-in ever, and Goodtimes checks it with a micrometer.

What about caster on a TJ, is that adjustable too?

I cannot find an impact mark on it and I dont have a service manual on it yet. hmmm I guess I had better get one and start reading...... but you guys are such a wealth of information. I am just amazed.

The tie rod should be strait, the drag link should not be strait (assuming OEM parts).

thanks goodtimes. Sure enough, I straightened it out and the steering wheel aligned up. Toe in checked in at 1/4.

                    Thanks again.

I figure I need to weld a stiffener bar to the tie rod.

I wouldn't bother the stock TJ tie rod is a weak link, dump it and start over. Either fab yourself or take a look at the Currie part.
