Yes of course aluminum conducts, it is the fourth best conductor right behind silver, copper, and gold. For a mount that will have a very large contact area, it performs as well as a steel mount does.

And a no-groundplane antenna is a VERY poor antenna designed only for use where there is no steel to mount the antenna on on. Like a fiberglass or wood boat, or fiberglass aircraft. It "gets along" without a steel mount but barely.

No-groundplane antennas are about the worst performing type of full size antenna you can find, and have no better than 50% of the performance of a traditional ground plane antenna. This is because with a groundplane antenna, the vehicle electrically becomes half of the antenna system, called a counterpoise, which doubles the effective size of the antenna.

No-groundplane antennas "work" and that's all that fiberglass boats can use but they are a very (!) poor performing antenna when compared to a traditional groundplane antenna.

So for a Jeep that has a steel tub, steel bumpers, steel frame, etc., you would not want to use a no-groundplane antenna unless you just like having a very poor performing antenna. They "work" but not nearly as well as a traditional groundplane antenna does.

jeeze, I thought the guy asked a simple question, wilson or firestik? If he didn't add the ground counceling comment this thread would have been dead already. Now my brain is all confused.

Be on the lookout for a small exterior speaker to plug into your new Cobra. The speaker inside the Cobra's microphone is necessarily very tiny and it's very hard to hear clearly inside a noisy Jeep, especially at speed or when the top is down. Just about all the Wrangler owners with that particular CB end up with an external speaker.

Yes, agreed. I'm asking for this thread to be closed. It's gone in a poor direction.

Glad to see you found what works for you.

            Cheers, B&T TJ
