building a snorkle

ok so i almost have the jeep the way i "NEED" her. now all i need is a snorkle. i dont know what to do, and i dont understand how they really work. do they not just seal up my airintake?? what about everything else like distributer?? now also im thinking about putting in a 350, now its carburated so how does that work?? im not 100% that im going to drop the small block in but if i do i want to cover the angles.

If you're not sure what the snorkel does, or how it works, are you sure you really "need" one?!

Snorkels on jeeps aren't (supposed to be for/made for/good for) water crossings.

If you want to turn your YJ into a submarine there's lots of things to work on.

If you just want to avoid sucking water when you slosh through a deep puddle, take a look at the air intake to the filter box. It pulls air from behind the grill at a low height, the worst place for a big bow wave.

Keep the stock air box and fabricate a duct that pulls air from high in the engine bay.

If you want to turn your YJ into a submarine there's lots of things to work on.

Like making breather tubes for the tranny and xfer case that go to the height of your snorkel... same goes for the axle breather tubes, right now they're not as high as you think!

ok?? so what your saying is that i cant build a snorkel that i can cross rivers with??well one that will keep out all the water. and sorry aston but i dont understand what you are meaning. so leave the airfilter box still behind the headlight, and then from there im lost. and steelmen i know what they are there for, i was more on the lines of the sealing of everything.

My suggestion is to leave the air box where it is, cap off the exisitng hole that faces forward then cut another one in the rear and plumb a duct into the upper corner of the engine bay. You may be able to incorporate the TJ inlet tube.

What Mater was saying is this! Your axles have breather tubes. Your Tranny and transfer case has breath tubes as well. I don't really know what they are used for, probably heat and pressure. (Gears, even with oil rubbing together create heat.) Unfortunately, water and oil (Which is what you have in your axles and all the other parts of your driveline) don't mix...never have and they never will. Because of such you lose the viscosity of the oil, and you'll destroy your gears over time...SOOOO, relocating these breather tubes to a position that wouldn't allow water to get into these areas would be a good thing to do. Did I do a good job explaining MJR guys? it's the first time I've talked about snorkles

Pretty much dead on! Snorkels were originally just to get the air intake coming from higher up to not suck in so much trail dust. They're not really for water crossings. We're not saying it's not possible to make a water tight system, but that it's not just your intake you need to worry about.

i say blend ALL of your breather tubes into one snorkel and do it that way. that way you can drive your jeep to hawaii during the summer.. cool idea huh!? huh huh huh????


but seriously, a snorkel in my opinion is only good for a cold air intake. its not really, truely a set up for water prevention. as mentioned, true it will keep your intake from pulling H20, but what about electrical stuff over a duration of crossings, you'd want an electric fan turned off, you need your axles, tranny and case protected as well. whats the point? this isnt water world. if you want a cool cold air intake, plumb your filter through your firewall into the ac air intake in your cowl.

ok now it all makes sense. thanks guys. and where would be a good idea to put all my breather lines?? up here in alberta its all mud, and water. so any prevention against damage is a good thing. and also cold i connect all of the breather lines?? then run a hose through my snorkle??
