I just wanted something to pull me out of the mud or a rut for light to medium off roading.

A 2000 lb winch won't do the trick for pulling you out of the mud. You should consider ToddH's suggestion for a winch that will do what you want.

Let's review......let's say your vehicle weighs around 4K lbs. On dry, flat pavement, it has a ROLLING RESISTANCE of a few hundred lbs. That's why a 200lb man can push a car. So YES, a 2000lb winch will work for moving a rolling load.

Now, your 4K lb vehicle is stuck in some mud. You now have 4000lbs of rolling resistance, plus the weight and suction of mud to contend with. A 2000lb winch is USELESS in this situation. Even a 6000lb winch would stuggle with this.
