86 CJ-8 starter ground wire......

For you CJ guys......1984 CJ-8 w/4.2l (258). There is a ~16ga wire (blk/wht) wire coming from the end of the starter to ground. WTF is this wire for??? Jeep runs fine w/o it, but isn't happy with it connected.......

It was hooked up before the F/I conversion......

I don't have that wire on my '86...? Not sure. I can look at the wiring diagram in my shop manual when I get home.
