  • Over knuckle Tie-rod

Okay I am bored at work and a thread on another site got me thinking.

A friend and I were looking at the tie rod and stuff onhis ZJ a couple of weeks ago and were wondering:

    1) could we move the tie bar from the bottom of the knucle (D30) to the top to gain a little extra clearance

    2) what this would screw up.

    3) Would it be the same for a TJ?

Has anyone done this or heard of it being done?

Look in the Nov issue of Petersons 4 Wheel magazine, they did a write up about the same kind of steering.

        1) Yes

        2) Nothing

        3) Yes

it can be done a couple different ways. One is by re-tapering the kuckle. This takes a special taper that isnt easy to find apperently. Or you could get som tie rod flip inserts from go fer it (I think). With these you drill out the taper and weld in the insert. to my knowedge, you can really screw anything up, unless you drill or taper wrong.

            Erik,

I have been sort of following that one and it seems a lot more involved then what I was thinking of but still very interested in how it turns out
