I wish this guy would come back lol, this is bugging me. So, if there's no NSS, then something closes the circuit for a manual, right? On the starter solenoid there's a ground post for a manual for a wire to go to ground versus a NSS. I'm guessing this ground wire acts as a jumper bypassing the switch?

When mine did this, it was the ign switch.
Easy by-pass if you know how to 'hot-wire' a car.
You just don't want to run the coil for very long on 12+ vdc, as you'll fry it.

IIRC this is the Iron Duke motor - a Pontiac by name, but GM none the less. Occasionally, the Bendix spring gets weak enough to let the Bendix engage the flywheel while it's running if the vehicle gets jarred just right. The Bendix slams back into the solenoid housing and can damage the ignition/run contacts.
I had this happen while driving. Everything looked fine, but a solenoid swap did the trick.
