CJ: no fire until key turned back

Ok. I'm new to the jeep world. I have a 1986 jeep cj7. Four cylinder engine. It's all stock. I was working on it an it accidently went in gear. Cut off. Wouldn't start again. Test fire to spark wire no fire. But when you turn key back it kicks out fire then back off. I've replaced plugs, wires, rotor, cap, distibutor, computer, ignition module, etc. Pretty much everything with the firing. One mechanic said it's in the steering column. Which I didn't think so. I'm at a dead end. Could it be key switch. Or is it deeper

Read the thread, download the service manual, run the troubleshooting steps described in post #7 of that thread and let us know what you find.

You might want to check out the neutral safety switch also, as it ties in with your ignition system. I think on the manuals there is a jumper in the switch, maybe it came out.

sounds like the starting solenoid to me.
but its only a guess

If you have done all the testing as mentioned earlier and have not found anything then I would take look at your clutch pedal and see if there is a switch at the top. If there is you can jump around and see if it starts. If you attempt to do this be aware that your jeep could start in gear, so make sure you push the clutch in as normal.

Simply start with a test light, turn on key, see if there is power on the positive side of the coil and go from there. Crank it and see if there is still power on the positive side of the coil. Then move test light to negative side of coil when cranking does the test light flicker? Try to keep your diagnostic simpler. Start here and let us now what your results are.

There's no NSS on a manual tranny CJ-7.
IIRC: AMC didn't offer a auto-trans with the 4 cyl engine.

Agreed, I was just thinking there would be something similar so that it wouldn't start in gear.

Have own'd my CJ for 30+ years. Never been an issue......
